A note from the designer

African fashion is a lifestyle.

I’m Francis Apata-Johnson, founder and designer of Ewa London. My work brings my Nigerian heritage into conversation with life in London: expressive print, considered silhouettes and clothing that carries a sense of identity.

Ewa London began in North London in 2012 as a family fashion business. At its heart is a simple belief: African fashion belongs in the way we live today, from everyday dressing to the occasions we remember.

The story of a piece

Heritage in colour. Elegance in motion.

This red, black and white gown expresses that approach through contrast. The repeating print brings energy to a long, sweeping silhouette. A dark centre panel gives the eye a place to rest, while the embellished high neckline catches the light. For me, it is a way of carrying the colour and presence of African occasion dressing into a contemporary evening wardrobe.

A closer look

The details give it character.

Look closely and the design becomes a conversation between surfaces: a sheer upper panel against the printed bodice; light-catching embellishment against deep black; patterned sleeves against the long fall of the skirt. The three-quarter sleeves leave room for a bracelet, while the defined waist gives shape to the generous skirt.

A gown needs to make sense in motion. In the runway photograph, the skirt opens to reveal the dark centre panel, changing the balance of colour with each step. That movement is part of the design’s character: expressive, composed and full of presence.

The design language

Print, proportion and possibility.

The supporting studies below explore the gown’s palette, silhouette and construction ideas alongside the finished look.

Design and workshop studies are presented as illustrative imagery; the runway and detail photographs show the garment. The studies are not a documentary record of this gown’s production.
